“The Zelkova Tree In The Autumn of 1817” by REW<< is a short, haunting tale told through piano and strings. The harmonic language is reminiscent of Debussy, while the strings that filter in remind one of Opeth’s backdrops. The shimmering string sections are a bit lo-fi, which adds to a sense of rustic or vintage sound. While the tune is relatively simple and the harmonic language relatively conservative, the result of the piano and strings together is something a bit haunting, edgy, and mystical. Indeed, the program notes state:
“In 1817 a Zelkova tree was struck by lightening revealing a chamber where mythical creatures made laws and governed themselves.”
It is a fascinating story despite its brevity, and the piano piece is just the same. Take a listen!
