“Clarity” by Kip LaVie is a mesmerizing wash of energy surrounding the listener in waves of sound.
The gentle but unstoppable sonic components in constant loops, intersected by drones, take on many forms. The beginning focuses on a more constant, broad texture. The next section is very heavily percussion-based.

Yet, the sonic materials are organic and stay relatively consistent. Flutes come and go, but always hint at the next thing. The overall scheme is of a world music, mixed with feel of latin jazz and a flair for the pop-oriented. At times I hear Pat Metheny group, at other times EDM, and at other times ethnic percussion.
There are loops that remind me of Steve Reich, and other times the work is long-winded like a Terry Riley composition. Overall the tune is a fascinating fusion of minimalism and more organic, vernacular music. This balance between the academic influences, popular music underpinnings, and sound design make this a wonder of a piece. Take a listen!
