Rebirth (34 over 44)

Rebirth (34 over 44) is my first rock song I have written in a while. It focuses on my Fender Made in Mexico Standard Stratocaster, a guitar I have owned since high school and one that I have put through many gigs, repairs, experiments, and recently a new set of pickups and a refurbish.

The track itself fuses synths and gritty guitar, based on a melody and chord structure I wrote on paper a few months ago. Originally intended as more of a hard rock song, the synths brought out a more soulful experience, and by adding organ to them, I turned this into a milder song. The song is still very much progressive rock.

I played all of the parts except the drum track, which uses Logic X’s Drummer feature. All of the mixing and mastering is mine too.

My favorite part of the process, besides recording the guitar solo, was playing the synths, actually. With my small MIDI controller, I rediscovered the joy of working with both hands on a keyboard. Despite the octave and a half range of the controller, it was still very enjoyable to play everything and experiment fully.

One quick note, the “34 over 44” is from a collision in Logic when changing time signatures from 3/4 to 4/4 that made it appear as if the time signature was 34/44. I found that visual collision to be amusing and decided to throw it in the title.

I am currently working on a piece for orchestra, and another guitar-based piece. The piece for orchestra is about a Zen koan, and the guitar-based piece is about defunding the police by 10% to fund mental health services. More to come about those projects.

I hope you enjoyed watching “Rebirth (34 over 44)“!
